Pōkeno Whisky is located on the magical North Island of New Zealand, in the town of Pōkeno, within a humid and fertile valley surrounded by volcanic mountains.

The distillery is a family-owned independent venture founded by Matt and Celine Johns, with the aim of producing innovative and distinctive single malt whiskies that truly reflect the climate and culture of Aotearoa – New Zealand.

Pōkeno performs every step in-house – from distillation to bottling – and is the only distillery in New Zealand with its own cooperage.

The Distillery – Quality over Quantity

As a true craft distillery, Pōkeno prioritises quality over volume, following its own path rather than the easiest one.

Premium Ingredients

Only the finest New Zealand ingredients are used.

The distillery’s water is drawn from a natural underground spring rich in minerals (iron and manganese). It takes around 100 years for the water to travel through volcanic rock before reaching the aquifer.

The barley is grown on three family farms on New Zealand’s South Island, where climate and soil give the malt natural sweetness and complexity.

Distillation & Maturation

The goal is to produce sweet, fruity single malt whiskies.

Fermentation lasts 90 hours, encouraging rich fruity notes.
Slow and gentle distillation preserves sweetness and creates a full, oily texture.

Due to Pōkeno’s climate, the angel’s share can reach up to 9% per year, accelerating maturation and intensifying flavour development.

Cooperage

Pōkeno uses only the highest quality casks and each cask is used only once.

Sources include:

  • Bourbon casks – Jack Daniel’s (USA)

  • Sherry casks – Bodegas Miguel Martin (Spain)

  • Port and wine casks – Portugal and New Zealand

The distillery operates New Zealand’s only cooperage and has begun producing casks from native woods.

One notable project is the award-winning Totara Cask, the first whisky cask made from native New Zealand timber.
